The proton (H+) is the simplest cation and the quintessential acid, yet its coordination chemistry is not well understood. In basic chemistry courses, chemical reactions involving aqueous acid are generally assumed to be based on the hydronium ion (H3O+) hypothesizing a coordination of the charged proton to an oxygen atom in water. In reality however, the situation is much more complex. Similar to the proton the hydronium ion cannot exist in a "naked" form in water.
