While colonialism and colonial rule were important aspects of the histories and lived realities of East Africa's coastal communities, there has been reluctance by archaeologists to study the material consequences of colonialism. The proposed study will employ an approach that is explicitly interdisciplinary, in order to investigate occurring changes and continuities of material styles and identities, changed networks of interaction, settlement patterns or food production systems.
