A grand goal within the field of animal evolution is to identify processes that contribute to an understanding of how and/or why the so called 'Cambrian Explosion' occurred. One aspect of this evolutionary significant event remains unexplained: how did so many different animal lineages relatively synchronously evolve the ability to biomineralize?
