We walk, run and jump, and constantly challenge our muscles, tendons, and cartilage. In these and other tissues, nature has come up with one major high performance protein-based polymer, collagen. Through dense chemical cross-linking between protein chains it is able to withstand extremely high mechanical load present. Excessive load ultimately results in tissue damage. What happens on the molecular level to protein fibers in tendons or muscle upon exercise? The project will examine how mechanical stress distributes and affects the structure of collagen fibers.
