There has been tremendous success in studying the response of matter on the femtosecond timescale (10e-15 s), and the exploration on the attosecond timescale (10e-18 s) holds equally great opportunities. Femtosecond dynamics is mediated by the nuclei of the atoms and molecules in a medium, whereas the electronic response evolves more rapidly within attoseconds.
