Nature has evolved the phosphate unit and its linear anhydrides as central for all aspects of life and many different modifications have been found. Conspicuously, the branched ultraphosphates have not been identified in any living organism. The team proposes that ultraphosphates have been overlooked and aim at identifying them. This would represent a paradigm-changing result in biology with profound consequences for our understanding of metabolism.
