The ability of HIV to establish latent infection in long-living cells allows the virus to persist for lifetime even under effective antiretroviral therapy and represents the major barrier to curing AIDS. Therefore, it is an open question whether we will ever be able to cure AIDS because it is currently impossible to activate all dormant viruses in order to eliminate the latent reservoirs without killing the human host.
