The history of Greek colonization in Sicily is filled with reports on military confrontation and the pursuit or defense of territorial control and political hegemony. Diverging interests of the different Greek poleis, the Phoenician settlements, the local populations and the global players from Athens, Carthage, and Rome did much to foster tension that on many occasions degenerated into violence.
