Life's most basic unit is the cell. Cells are either of prokaryotic or eukaryotic nature and eukaryotes evolved from prokaryotes. Of this transition, eukaryogenesis, no intermediates are known and it is characterized through the emergence of compartments inside the eukaryotic cell that include the nucleus and mitochondrion. This proposal aims at testing a recent and original theoretical framework on the origin of eukaryotic compartmentalization and early events of mitochondrion development.
