For decades computer hardware has been built from ever faster microelectronic devices. And apart from quantum computing, only few attempts have been made to create completely new approaches for the next generation of computers. Cognitive computing aims at combining 'thinking' (i.e. the processor) and 'memorizing' (i.e. data storage) similarly to the human brain which would result in far lower energy consumption than recent computers.
