For seasonal thermal energy storage sizeable pit storage plants have been built in the subsurface with great volumes (thousands of cubic meters) of water-filled gravel. A major challenge is to minimize the net energy loss during operation. The available concepts and materials for safe long-term lateral insulation are not satisfying. Holes in plastic liners often yield leakage, and water accumulating in swelling granulates or polystyrene at the outer walls significantly enhances heat loss.
