It is unclear whether humans and closely-related large animal models like pigs can enter a low temperature, "hibernation-like" state. Recent progress has allowed the identification and manipulation of so called thermostat cells in the laboratory mouse and activation of these discrete hypothalamic neurons in vivo triggers a low-temperature state (down to 27°C body temperature) which is completely reversible.
