RNA viruses are known to infect many lineages within Eukarya and recent evidence from RNA metagenomes has also indicated considerable diversity of RNA viruses that infect Bacteria. Surprisingly, in the archaeal domain no RNA virus has been isolated, and the metagenomic evidence for the existence of such viruses has been debated.
