This project argues that the articulation of rationality in the French Enlightenment was rooted in theological discourse, through the study of eighteenth-century scholarship on the history of the natural world. These works were at the center of a paradigm shift that redefined the relationship between existing disciplines of natural history, geography, and Biblical exegesis and re-evaluated the production of knowledge at the intersection of nature and human thought.
