This project concerns the intellectual and cultural history of ?the underground," one of the most powerful metaphors of the modern era. By combining the methods of Hans Blumenberg's metaphorology and Reinhart Koselleck's science of historical experience, this study plans to develop a theory of resistance that interprets the underground as an imagined space: a world of secret social relations that yields novel forms of political consciousness.
