Did porous volcanic rocks provide the geochemical setting for the first steps of molecular evolution? At the emergence of life, the geological setting of the early Earth must have hosted crucial synthesis steps. The formation of RNA and peptides must have successfully competed against inherent degradation and nonbiological structural variants. For this, a non-equilibrium setting was necessary.
