We now have technology to replace entire genomes with synthesized DNA. Synthetic living systems containing this designer DNA can be used as tools to investigate what is possible to achieve with life's molecular building blocks. The world's first fully synthetic eukaryotic organism, the yeast S. cerevisiae 2.0 (Sc2.0), was pre-programmed with the radical ability to rearrange its genome on demand in a process called SCRaMbLE.
