Concepts for detecting and identifying individual nanoscale species that are unlabeled and exposed to their natural environment are in high demand. Examples include the understanding of virus-induced infectious diseases or the development of novel vaccinations. Raman scattering is proposed for the unambiguous and non-invasive identification of a virus. However, the small scattering efficiency has prevented its use so far.
