Parts made of fiber reinforced plastics accumulate micro damages under fatigue loading, which can unite to macro cracks. The growing macro cracks lead to a reduction of stiffness and strength until final failure of a structure can occur. Intentional voids in fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) could arrest fatigue cracks due to the unloading of the crack tip, leading to superior fatigue properties compared to perfect FRP.
