Rhododoccus equi is a soil bacterium causing a tuberculosis-like disease in foals and in immunosuppressed humans. Our research team has fortuitously observed that virulence factors can be induced when Rhodococcus is cultivated in single-use polypropylene tubes rather than inert glass tubes. Thus, the main question addressed in this project is how can contact with plastic components increase the virulence potential for certain soil bacteria.
