One of the most inspiring features of biological materials is the ability to change a specific property (like mechanical stiffness) through an external stimulus. From this idea, shape-memory polymers have been developed which can change their shape in a predefined way when exposed to a suitable trigger (e.g. heat). However, most shape-memory polymers have only a one-way memory effect. Thus, the temporary shape can no longer be obtained after one recovery cycle.
