Intracellular pathogens are experts in immune evasion. Development of a protective immune response relies on induction of specific T-cell responses, which is best achieved with live attenuated vaccines. However, many of these pathogens are experimentally not accessible and attenuated strains (especially in case of the malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium) cannot be produced in huge amounts, are hard to preserve and to administer.
