Since the discovery of X-rays in 1895, absorption based image capture has been used for medical and non-medical applications. It took about 75 years to achieve the first phase contrast image with synchrotron radiation. The key question is whether medical X-ray phase contrast imaging can be realized safe, with sufficiently low X-ray dose, and cheap, avoiding the expensive and difficult-to-manufacture gold gratings.
