Multi-resistant bacterial infections are one of today's most pressing global health issue. The excessive, inappropriate and inefficient use of first-line beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins has led to the development of a high number of beta-lactam resistant pathogens as the major killers in this scenario. In addressing this challenge, the team will develop smart polymeric nanogels to recognize the presence of an infection with beta-lactam resistant bacteria and only there and then induce the release of an antibiotic of last resort.
