In the last decade or so, Russia's assertive foreign policy and influence in the post-Soviet neighbourhood, especially in Ukraine, has become an undermining factor to both domestic and external democratisation efforts. Russia's support to authoritarian regimes in Central Asia might be both intentional and unintentional, but this does not make it less successful.
