The honeybee offers the great opportunity to investigate insect behavior in depth. However, when it comes to genetic manipulation, the honeybee is not ideal. The CRISPR/Cas9 method offers for the first time the chance to knock out individual genes and then test their function for the organism. The first new direction of the professorship adresses clock genes. Intriguingly, the honeybee clock system is more similar to the human clock than to some insect clocks.
