Particulate pollution of the atmosphere is an ever-growing problem in advanced economies. While up to a half of all airborne particles may arise from natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions or soil erosion, the rest matter is emitted by human activities including industry, traffic, agriculture and domestic heating.
