Fungal crop pathogens are endangering food production and sustainable plant protection strategies are required. For pathogenic smut fungi, pheromone / receptor guided mating is a prerequisite for virulence and disease development in the hostplant. Exploiting this linkage between fungal mating and virulence for crop protection can become an innovative and significant contribution for a knowledge driven, sustainable agriculture.
