Lung diseases are second only to cardiovascular diseases in terms of mortality, incidence, prevalence and cost. Throughout Europe, about 300,000 deaths per year are due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Currently, the use of oxygenators for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is associated with a set of complications including neurological injuries.
