Cancer metastasis is the spread of cancer cells to tissues and organs beyond the primary tumor site. Despite metastasis being the most frequent life-threatening event in patients with cancer, metastatic processes remain poorly understood and approaches to combat metastasis have limited efficacy. Macrophages are one of the most abundant immune cells in the microenvironment of solid tumours and interestingly, the presence of macrophages in the tumor correlates with reduced survival in most cancers.
