The vault is the largest ribonucleotide hollow capsid-like structure in eukaryotic cells. It has been implied in multidrug resistance, transport of proteins as well as innate immunity, in particular interferon and cytokine production. Although, it has led to several speculations and hypotheses about its function, a definite function that could explain the vault's abundance and its high conservation in most eukaryotes has not been demonstrated.
