Friction occurs whenever the attractive interactions between two bodies have to be broken in order to move these two against each other. This leads to dissipation of energy, which is usually undesired and lost. According to some studies, approx. 23% of the world's total energy consumption is related to friction. However, in other applications friction is desirable, especially where force is transmitted such as in belt drives or breaking systems. Therefore, the control of friction on different surfaces, ideally in a reversible manner by an external stimulus would be a great advancement....
