Counterintuitively, tumors beyond the central nervous system (CNS) share remarkable similarities with the brain. One striking feature of cancer that resembles the brain is the large amount of glutamate being secreted, which serves distinct functions. While in cancer, secreted glutamate plays a central role as a metabolite and autocrine/paracrine signaling activator, in the brain, it functions as an excitatory neurotransmitter in synaptic and extrasynaptic junctions.
