Absorption of anthropogenic carbon dioxide is predicted to make the oceans up to 2.5 times more acidic by the year 2100, with profound repercussions for marine ecosystems that are of key societal and economic importance. Amongst the most vulnerable organisms to this change are those that build a shell of calcium carbonate ('marine calcifiers'), because producing this relatively soluble mineral may be far more energetically challenging under more acidic conditions.
