One of the basic pillars of the theory of evolution is the assumption that evolutionary processes are driven by random and undirected mutations. Accordingly, this theory assumes that environmental influences or acquired traits have no direct influence on the genome and thus cannot be passed on to descendants, as originally postulated by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck.
