Zusammenfassung

The development of urgently needed new psychiatric therapeutics has stagnated for decades due to the lack of suitable, brain circuit-specific molecular targets. This project proposes to solve this problem by bypassing endogenous drug targets altogether and instead using viral vectors to introduce exogenous pharmacogenetic targets, focusing on GABAA (gamma-aminobutyric acid A) receptors in anxiety circuits as a proof-of-concept. The results from this study will provide first evidence of feasibility for a radically new approach to treating psychiatric disorders.
