Hantaviruses (order Bunyavirales, family Hantaviridae) are globally emerging pathogens. After transmission to humans via aerosols, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) involving immunopathogenic processes are observed. As no approved vaccines or therapeutic countermeasures are available, treatment of hantavirus-induced disease in humans is only supportive.
