The recent Leopoldina report ?Earth System Sciences" has emphasised that many of the grand challenges of our time require a holistic understanding of the Earth System. Considering the high complexity of this system, it is obvious that these cannot be solved by the classical disciplines alone, but that the solutions require new, inherently interdisciplinary, methods and approaches, i.e., the holistic approach of the Earth System Sciences (ESS).
