Besides the production of mushrooms as food, techniques have been developed in recent years that use the highly intertwined fungal mycelium (i.e. the ‘root‘ of fungi) to produce mycelium-based materials such as insulation, packaging, leather alternatives, building or regenerative biomaterials. Economic production and scalability, besides difficulties in meeting technical requirements, are a bottleneck for these environmentally friendly and sustainable materials.
