Malaria is a major infectious disease, causing more than half a million deaths every year globally. It is caused by a parasite transmitted between humans by certain mosquitoes. The most important and effective antimalarial drug is artemisinin, with no comparable alternative. Alarmingly, malaria parasites in East Africa have recently developed resistance against this drug.
