The vertebrate embryo initially harbors a single large intraembryonic cavity (the coelom) that is lined by an epithelium of mesodermal origin. This cavity is gradually partitioned into the peritoneal cavity in the abdomen, and the pleural and pericardial cavities in the thorax. The outer or parietal layer of the coelomic epithelial lining (CE) represents the inner surface of the body wall whereas the inner or visceral layer covers the inner organs towards the coelomic cavities.
