Proteins are the hardware of the cell. Like manmade machines, proteins often function as an assembly of many different parts. Building a protein machine in the densely packed environment of a cell is a big challenge since newly synthesized proteins can be sticky or fragile. What are the control mechanisms that ensure that protein machines have the right number of each part included? This project focusses on a protein machine, COPI, that is involved in the generation of vesicles, membrane-enclosed "bags" allowing cells to separate molecules into different spaces inside or outside cells....
