Amebiasis is an intestinal disease transmitted by the protist parasite Entamoeba histolytica, following the ingestion of contaminated food and water. Poor sanitary conditions and unsafe hygiene practices existing in many parts of the world make of amebiasis a global medical problem: the World Health Organization estimates that 50 million people in India, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America suffer from amebic dysentery and amebiasis causes the death of at least 100,000 individuals each year.
